How to Get Your Home Guest-Ready for Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, and if you're hosting, the house is part of the celebration. The good news: you don't need to clean everything the night before. Spread the work over four weeks and the holiday feels calm instead of rushed.
Four weeks out: declutter and plan
- Walk through the house like a guest. Start at the front door and note what stands out: piles of mail, overflowing shoe racks, a cluttered guest bed.
- Clear the surfaces guests will use: entry table, kitchen counters, dining table and the guest bathroom vanity.
- Book help early. Holiday weeks fill up fast. If you want a professional clean before the big day, schedule it now and pick a date two or three days before Thanksgiving.
Three weeks out: the guest room
- Wash the bedding, mattress protector and pillows, and put out a fresh set of towels.
- Dust nightstands, lamps and the headboard; wipe the closet shelves and leave a few empty hangers.
- Vacuum under the bed: it's the spot visiting kids always find.
Two weeks out: kitchen deep clean
Thanksgiving dinner means hours of cooking, so get the kitchen ready while it's still easy:
- Oven: clean the inside now, not the day before. Self-clean cycles create smoke and odors; natural methods are in our post on oven cleaning hacks.
- Refrigerator: empty, wipe and organize it so the turkey and side dishes fit.
- Appliances: descale the coffee maker and clean the microwave. See how to clean kitchen appliances.
- Cabinets and pantry: wipe the fronts, toss expired spices and make space for serving dishes.
This is also the best time for a professional deep cleaning: baseboards, doors, light switches, vents and built-up kitchen and bathroom grime, all done in one visit.
One week out: bathrooms and living areas
- Scrub the guest bathroom top to bottom, restock toilet paper, hand soap and a spare towel.
- Wash throw blankets and pillow covers, vacuum the sofa and dust shelves and frames.
- Clean the glass on the patio door and the front door — they get a lot of attention when guests arrive.
Two days before: the final clean
Floors vacuumed and mopped, bathrooms refreshed, kitchen counters clear. If you booked a regular house cleaning for this day, your team handles it while you shop for groceries.
The morning of
Empty the dishwasher and the trash, set out a hand towel in every bathroom and light a candle. Done.
After the guests leave
The day after Thanksgiving is for leftovers, not scrubbing. Many families book a cleaning for the following week to wipe down the kitchen, wash floors and reset the guest room before December.
